I got the idea from the first birthday cake section' on this website, and its the 'My 1st birthday' party kit. The recipe is a chiffon chocolate cake, baked in an ordinary rectangle pan. I then made butter icing and coloured it the two different shades of pink.
The light pink center part was outlined with a toothpick and it's best to ice the sides first with either a spatula or pastry brush. I used rolled out icing, coloured and cut out accordingly, to make the words, name, balloons and strings, and cup cake case, and then a large nozzle to do the icing on the cup cake case, finally adding the butterfly and heart sweets and glitter.
Alyssa's older sister Amelia was so impressed. All the kids loved it and came for seconds and thirds - I ended up having just a small taste, but it tasted great.
This was my first try at baking a birthday cake and I was very proud of myself!
I made this First Birthday Cake for my daughter as I'm bias towards first birthdays having to be a number 1 cake! I wanted to use yellow as it's such a gorgeous colour for a little girl.
I did a buttercream icing and kept it 'kid friendly' by only adding 1 drop of yellow food colouring. I made the flowers out of marshmallows (cut in half then pinched at each end) and decorated the outside of the number 1 with cut musk sticks. I also got some little flower decorations from Angel Dust which is a mixture of pre-made decorations and sprinkles.
You can see I made her name out of smarties but a word of advice, don't put a cake in the fridge if you have smarties on it (they discolour as a result of sugar bloom).
I made this First Birthday Cake for my nephew's 1st birthday. It was Cookies 'n Cream, with cream cheese frosting. One box of white cake mix and chopped Oreo cookies and 1 can of cream cheese frosting. Follow directions on box and then add chopped Oreo's.
I used a 9x13 inch pan. When it was cool I cut it in the shape of a one and then added the frosting. I added the blue coloring to the can of frosting in a bowl with a hand mixer. I also added about 1 tablespoon of Crisco. I added powdered sugar until it was right for decorating.
The green, orange, and white icing was left over from another cake I did.
I made this first birthday cake for my friend's daughter's 1st birthday. She wanted a no. 1 shaped cake decorated with flowers and butterflies and I managed to find one exactly as she wanted it on-line. I'd never made a shaped cake before so I was a bit nervous.
So I made the no. 1 shape by baking two oblong shaped cakes and then I cut them up and built them into a no. 1 shape. I then covered the cake with vanilla buttercream and ivory coloured sugarpaste, and then decorated it.
Everyone loved it! I'm looking forward to my next challenge now!
I had a friend ask me to make a cake for her son's first birthday cake. She gave me the colors and the design she wanted. From there, I came up with the 1/2 sheet cake frosted with butter cream (I used 1/2 real butter and 1/2 shortening).
I wanted to do something different so I came up with just placing rolled white fondant on top of the cake, this is where everyone wrote their "Best Wishes" to the birthday boy in edible markers. It turned out to be a great hit.
