I made this cake out of chocolate sponge consisting of two layers. First i colored the fondant in pink coloring enough to cover the top and the bottom sponge cake. Carefully covering the bottom sponge and then the same with the top sponge. This was the first cake i ever made out of fondant for my daughters 1st birthday. I used a star nozzle tip chocolate flavored to decorate the middle where the sponge meets and the bottom to hide all the messy mistakes of the fondant. Then i cut out shapes and glued them on with a little water. For the top i wanted to go with a flower but didn't quite master the flower so i cut out green fondant as the leaves and used some pink icing as the flower bud. Also i used some some brought mini flowers and stuck them onto the shapes cut out of fondant using a little icing to add effect. Finally i used some shop brought lolly pops and stuck them into the bottom layer of the cake.
For this first birthday cake I started with a half sheet of marble cake, froze the cake overnight to make cutting it out easier. Then I drew a quick paper pattern of a large number "one" that used up most of the cake and layed it onto the cake.
Next I cut the cake in the shape of the pattern with a sharp knife while the cake was still frozen. I frosted it with homemade buttercream frosting and also added blue coloring to a small batch to make the decorative features. The fish, turtle, and shark are gummies, and the bubbles are spots of the blue frosting.
I am not a cake maker by any means, but I am a loving father of his first child. My wife and some of her family didn't believe me when I said I was going to make my son's first cake!
I used a 1 quart pyrex mixing bowl for the body and a cupcake for the head. I cut the top of the cake to make it lie flat and also cut the top of the cupcake to make it lie flat. Then I added some pink food coloring to butter cream icing to make it pink. I used a star icing tip to frost the cake. First I did the black icing and then the pink. I used black birthday candles for the antlers and googlie eyes for the eyes and white icing for the smile. It was very easy. I practiced 2 weeks before her birthday. I wanted to make sure I did a good job. We had a great birthday party.
I made this first birthday cake for my son, it was my first try at fondant and I made my own marshmallow fondant (from an online recipe, very easy!).
I made two sheet cakes, cut the top in a "1" shape and covered with canned frosting and the fondant and made little fondant "pearls" for the outline (although they were not the best).
The cake itself was a simple box cake then I added an extra egg with the hopes to make it a little more firm. I then sprinkled with funfetti sprinkles, and positioned the candles with a bit of canned frosting. Was not too bad for my first try ever at fondant and a shaped cake!
