This was the birthday cake for my daughters 1st birthday. I had never baked a cake before let alone iced it but I think it turned out OK. I used a violet paste for the icing.
For the shape I baked 2 sponges. The first sponge I cooked in a small loaf tin and the second sponge I cooked in a rectangle roasting tin.
The sponge from the rectangle tin was the plain number 1 and the loaf tin sponge sat below the number 1. We then cut the top of the number 1 on an angle to get the correct shape. I cut both sponges and filled with cream and jam and covered the whole thing in purple icing and smarties.
Everybody loved it!
