The Last of Summer Birthday Cake

I did this cake for a friends birthday, it just so happened that it was on the last day of summer. I didn’t wan’t to do a fall cake just yet, since it was so early in season. So, I settled on this last day of summer cake. The cake is chocolate with Bavarian cream. I iced it in pale blue butter cream, I offset the layers to make it more like steps.

I made the starfish and shells from fondant and gumpaste. I originally painted the shells and starfish but I didn’t like the way they turned out, so I wiped them down, and I found I liked the wiped down look better. I made  2 pair of flip flops to place in front of chairs on top out of fondant as well.My husband made the chairs, only thing I would have changed is the middle board in the chair, I would have made that one taller, but all in all I think it turned out pretty good.

The cake was a big hit, my girlfriend loved it.
