I made this cake for a lady who wanted to surprise her father-in-law.
I baked two quarter sheet cakes, iced the layers and stacked them, and carved the shape of the cake out of the block. The fins on the back were a bit more challenging than I had anticipated, so I just carved the bases of them thicker for added stability.
I crumb coated the entire cake with plain white butter cream and decorated the details with colored conventional icing (powdered sugar, vanilla and shortening)
After piping the details, I mixed a small amount of silver luster dust into a half-shot of plain vodka and painted over to give them a chrome look.
After smoothing the ?windows/windshields? I painted the details such as the steering wheel and seats in with black icing tint and a paintbrush.
This cake would have looked much better with fondant, but she wanted regular icing.
The entire cake is done with icing and no candies, fondant or other techniques were used.
