I made this Artist Palette cake for my daughter's fifth birthday which had an arts and craft theme.
The cake was a 9" x 13" cake. I made it into a rainbow cake by dividing up the yellow cake batter into six equal parts and then coloring each a different color: purple, blue, green, red, orange and yellow. I then poured each layer into the pan one at a time, starting with the purple.
Once the cake was cooled, I cut it into a palette shape and then froze for easy frosting. I frosted with white butter cream and then made frosting blobs of different colors for the top. Fondant could be used as well. I made five spots as she was five. I then added the real paint brushes. I found the cute mini easel at Michaels for the name tag. This was really easy and fun to make.

My parents are both artists who mainly do watercolors AND their birthdays are 4 days apart. They loved this Artist Palette Birthday Cake. After seeing other cakes like it on this site and the web, I found a clip art picture of an artists palette, enlarged it and cut it out.
I baked and stacked two large rectangular cakes. They were just box mixes and store bought icing in between the layers and around. I froze the iced layers for a day, placed the cut-out clip art image on top and carved the shape out. Then I covered the whole thing in white fondant (Wilton pre-made). The hole was tricky but I made it work. I squeezed different colored butter cream icing out of Ziploc bags for the paint blobs.
My daughter's paintbrushes topped off the cake. It was fun to make and pretty easy!
This artist palette cake was made with regular 13 x9 pan (2 layers),and 1 9"inch round pan( which you cut out the palette shape). You can either draw one or purchase from Michael's store in the artist supply area. Tubes of paint , brushes and small tray w/paint purchased from Michael's along with assorted stickers from scrapbook area for cake board.
Icing is homemade using the Wilton recipe from Wilton book for buttercream in yellow & chocolate for the palette. The paint on palette is different tubes of ready made icing from Michaels. Chocolate was the preferred flavor for recipient of this cake, but any flavor will do.
