Baby in a Nest Shower Cake

A good friend of mine is having a baby girl, and her name will be “Robyn”. I wanted to make a very special and memorable cake for her baby shower, so I decided to use the baby’s name as the theme for the cake! I sculpted a baby “Robyn” asleep in a robin’s nest complete with blue eggs. The finished product was unique and so precious! No one wanted to cut in to the cake when it was time to eat it! My friend ended up saving the top layer and freezing it. She said when Robyn is born they can eat the top layer and celebrate as a family. I thought it was a great idea!!

I used marshmallow fondant for all the decorations, including the baby and nest. The cake was a white cake frosted with lemon buttercreme and layered with strawberry preserves. The lemon/strawberry combo was delicious, and perfect for the summer baby shower! The frosting recipe is very simple and delicious:

1/2 cup salted butter (cuts down the sweetness)

1/2 cup shortening

3 cups powdered sugar

1 tbsp of milk

I added 2 tbsp of lemon juice for the lemon flavor, but you can add vanilla, orange juice concentrate, almond exteact or whatever flavoring you want. The recipe is a great base though!
