This Baby Shower Safari Theme Cake is a 3 tier cake with butter creme icing and homemade fondant. The homemade fondant is very easy to make, it's 1-16oz bag of mini marshmallows and add 3 tablespoons of water into a large bowl greased with shortening, and microwave 30 seconds at a time till melted, then add into bowl 1 32oz bag of powdered sugar. Mix with a greased spoon then dump it on a VERY well greased counter and knead till pow. sugar is mixed in and it forms into a smooth ball. Let rest for at least a few hours then roll out amount that is needed to cover a butter creme iced cake.
Add gel color to your liking. The animals are gum paste (a form of fondant but dries hard). I made these trial and error, lets just say they took awhile. I looked at videos on youtube for help.
It was for a baby shower and the girl gave me a picture to look at and I went from there!

My good friend from work was having a baby shower. She was having a boy so I wanted to give this cake a fun theme yet a little more blue than any other color. The cake is made up of a 6", 2-8" layers, and 2-10" layers. The flavors were lemon, orange, and strawberry cake. A simple buttercream was used with extract of choice. I covered the cakes in fondant icing and applied various fondant cutout shapes. I bonded them to the cake with royal icing. And the borders are colored buttercream. The decorations at the top of the cake were picked up from my local bake store Party Cakes'n Things...very inexpensive. However...since the time of making this cake I have started using water to bond fondant to a cake. It sticks better, gives off a smoother look, and if you get a little on the outer part of the decoration no one will ever know but you. This cake was the life of the party.
My friend was having her second baby and we did not know boy or girl. I used two round cakes for the head and body. I iced each cake and let it sit for 10 minutes. I went back and smoothed the icing by patting a non textured paper towel on the cake. I used Wilton Fondant for the diaper, cheeks, ears, arms, nose, belly button, etc.
To make the diaper roll out a big piece of fondant cut one side straight across. Lay it across the cake and trim around the circle once it is in place. Make sure when mixing your color to do it slowly. You do not want the arms to be darker than the body. When all your details are on the cake plug a pacifier in the babies mouth!
This Boy or Girl Baby Shower Cake is so easy. Everyone loved it!
This Girl Baby Shower Cake & Cupcakes I made for my lil sister's first baby shower.
I used two different sizes of round pans for face and body. Then crumb coated with butter cream frosting. I used marshmallow fondant to cover the cake and for decorating cupcakes.
It was an instant hit. It was very easy to make and the result was like a pro. Every one loved it a lot especially my sister, she really liked it. And the cupcakes were taken as souvenirs by the guests. The baby in blanket cupcake topper was everyone's favorite.
I made my sister's baby shower invitations and cake based on the design from the bedding she selected at Target. It was my first time making a cake like this. It's a 2 tier, chocolate, mocha-icing filled cake with marshmallow fondant icing. Everyone loved the taste of the marshmallow with the chocolate. I was suprised at how easy the fondant was to work with!
