Crybaby Cake is quite easy to make. This is my first attempt using fondant, I am really pleased with how it turned out.
To make the Baby Shower Cake Design: 16in round cake tin, Rose Icing colour, Copper colouring for the skin colour,(I used peach couldn't find copper) Black colouring, 2-3pks White Rolled Fondant or White Royal Icing (cheaper) and buttercream Icing. Spread thin layer buttercream icing onto cake and apply fondant on top or you can use apricot jam. Tint fondant Copper (skintone) colour and cover cake.
Using pattern for mouth, tint fondant black roll out and cut shape attach to face using water to damp the area so it will stick. Roll four small strips for eyes again position on cake. With skintone fondant cut ears and roll edges, roll a small oval for nose. Using Rose colour roll two circles for cheeks. Attach facial features. With remaining fondant roll a long log shape to be placed on side of head from ear to ear for bonnet. Using Buttercream icing pipe ruffle on fondant log and pipe a tie under chin. I also piped some hair on head or just a few curls and added two teeth made from rolled white fondant and the tongue from white fondant as well.
I was ask to do a Baby Shower Cake Design for a lady at our church, so I took a 14x14 square pan and a 6x6 pan. I used 1 3/4 cake mix. I prepared the 2 pans and baked according to directions. Let cool.
I iced the larger one with buttercream white icing. Then I placed the smaller one in center of the large one and iced the smaller one with white buttercream icing. With pink buttercream icing using tip #16 I put stars around the edges and sides of both cakes. With tip #2 I placed 3 dots of pink together to make quilt design on smaller cake.
I placed baby figurine on top, with 2 rose buds in 2 corners then added small rose with green leaves on base of small cake. For large cake I used tip #12 and placed small white stars scattered over the top. I placed baby rattlers in each corner, with diaper pin between them.
The figurines and rattlers can be kept for the baby.
The Homemade Baby Shower Cake Design is a double layered 10 inch round. The inside is hollowed out, so you actually lose a lot of cake. I wrapped the doll in plastic wrap first so the icing wouldn't sink into the fabric body and then wrapped it in the blanket. Everything on the cake is edible except for the baby, the blanket and the bow. You can get edible Easter grass at the grocery store on the seasonal candies isle (with the Easter candy).
Because I lost a lot of cake when I hollowed it out I made cupcakes that look like diapers. The cupcake is hollowed out too but filled with chocolate pudding. The top of the cupcake is placed back on the top and then it is iced. When the cupcake is bit into the pudding oozes out. This is called a dirty diaper cupcake. They must be refrigerated until just before serving because of the pudding. Kids love them!!
