I volunteered to make my sister in law a Baby Shower Cake. It was my first experience making a cake for someone other than my children. I took the challenge to heart and looked at many a Baby Shower Cake Idea online, used a few ideas from others to come up with this one.
It is a basic vanilla cake on the bottom and chocolate on the top filled with buttercream. Pans used were 10in and 8in. Covered and decorated with store bought fondant. For the topper I made fondant stars and attached them to floral wire. It was my first time making a bow and sculpting.
The baby was so much fun to make! I got a little carried away and made a pacifier and he's also wearing a little diaper. The blanket was also removable. It was a really fun cake to make. I can't wait for someone to ask me to do another!
The head is made from pure fondant and was made first. I used 4 rectangle butter cakes. The larger the better. I layered them with whipped vanilla icing. I sketched up a rough idea of the shape of a sleeping bubby, then cut it out in the slab. I carved little crevices with a small knife (arms, back arch) and shaved the edges to make it rounded.
With the off cuts of cake I cut two triangle pieces and set them aside for the booties. I covered the whole cake in whipped vanilla icing, and pink (or what ever color you like) fondant. Before coloring put some white fondant aside for the shoes.
The nappy, dummy and rubber duckie are all made from fondant and were made a week before hand so they could harden.
This was my first attempt at making a cake with fondant and stand up bears, I like the way it came out but I know I can do better and Im going to keep trying and looking at all these cakes I am falling in love with all the cakes that are on this website I cant wait to create some of these. This cake was made with a two layer marble and 3 stand up teddy bears and the fondant I haven't found an easy way to lay out fondant but I am looking at different web pages and other peoples pictures and I hope to become a good cake decorator
