Coolest Homemade 2 Tiered Barney Birthday Cake

My daughter was really into Barney right before she turned two so of course I had to make her a Barney cake!  After scouring the internet for ideas I felt ready to tackle the project.  I baked two double round cakes in different sizes and cut a cake board to the size of the top tier so I could work on it separately before stacking on the bottom layer using wood dowels for support.

I covered each cake in butter cream then fondant.  Using the flat side of a knife, I pushed lines into the fondant to “quilt” the cakes.  Cut out the strips and flowers and pasted on with a little water.  The pop-out part is just a round piece of fondant cut from the center and laid on top and curled out.  I molded Barney like play-doh in my hands but if I had to do it over, I would have molded him over a rice crispy treat because that amount of fondant was very heavy and I ended up giving Barney a support dowel too so he wouldn’t sink into the cake!  The flag is just cut fondant on a wood skewer with piped butter cream for the words.  The “2” is two ropes of fondant twisted together and pasted on.

My daughter lit up and shouted “Barney!” as soon as she saw it.  She was sooo excited and that made me very happy.
