I made this Barney cake for my Son's 2nd Birthday. We used 10 inch and 6 inch pans. We tinted the cake purple using food coloring and used store bought vanilla frosting, colored Green with coloring gel (bought at Michaels craft store).
After having a hard time trying to smooth the frosting we decided to swirl it using a toothpick. We bought ready made fondant. We rolled it out and used cookie cutters to cut out shapes and 2's for my son turning two!!! Peel the shapes off wax paper and stick to the frosting.
We ordered "cake toppers" online and bought star candles at the dollar store. I really liked the candles because they added to the shape theme of the whole party.
This Barney cake is a normal cake, bought at a confectionery/bakery, I just did the decoration. The client wanted a cake with the theme Barney, so, I decided to make a picnic. Everything on it can be eaten.
The grass is coconut mixed with green dye. The trees were made with lollipops covered with green sugar. Barney and his friends were made with coconut too and covered with fondant. Flowers, sandwiches, glasses were of sugar paste.
The track was of white chocolate and the stones of chocolate. Things like arms, legs, hair, cap and others were of sugar paste too. The picnic basket was of sugar paste and the things in it, were some candies, bought at a normal store.
This Barney and Friends Cake is very simple. The tricky part is of course when you shape Barney, PJ and baby Bop's bodies with the sugarpaste but I studied them carefully from a picture and the result was in my opinion very good.
Then I wanted to create a colourful covering for the cake which will serve as a background for the characters and thought what is more colourful then a nice rainbow? So I cut out some sugarpaste stripes of different colours and placed them like a rainbow on the cake. I also placed the birthday boy's name on a cloud and did some other small decorations to make the cake more pretty.
My baby girl turned one and she has been watching Barney along with some other shows since she was about 3 months old. She just loved Barney and still does so I made him the theme at her 1st Birthday Party together with a Barney cake.
It is very hard to find Barney products but I did find this Wilton pan on eBay for only 2.50 and then downloaded the instructions from a friendly website. I purchased the icing dyes (Wilton). The cake came out so delicious and this is the second cake I made and first time using the star tips and other tips.
