I made this Farmyard Birthday Cake Idea for a friend who's little boy was turning two years old. It was my first time to use marshmallow fondant. Once I learned to cover my hands with JUST A DAB of Crisco, the fondant was a fun challenge. The frosting is buttercream and chocolate buttercream. The barn is rice krispie treats and graham crackers, I melted marshmallows for the glue.
The barn and cow are sitting on pretzel rods. I wanted everything to be edible. I used a large marshmallow covered with buttercream frosting for the hay stack and a green bush (behind the barn). The animals, eggs, rocks, butterfly(on the sign) and carrots are marshmallow fondant. The sign is a graham cracker covered in melted white chocolate, supported with pretzel rods. I thinned one batch of frosting with Karo syrup for the mud, pond water and light green frosting used to frost the cake.
It was a lot of work, but a lot of fun. I am very happy with the results. My biggest challenge was keeping my own two year old away from the animals while they were drying.

My grandson Brayden loves the outdoors and animals. So this year my daughter decided to do a "down on the farm " birthday party for his second birthday. I made his birthday cake for family and friends and also made him his own small cake! After several weeks of thinking she and I decided exactly how we were going to decorate and what we wanted the cake to look like. I made a two layer sheet cake with butter cream icing used green dye for color and also dyes coconut to make grass. i used chocolate sprinkles for the dirt in the tractor trailers and mounds, then i made ponds and streams with blue gel icing. All the farm animals and tractors were bought from Wal Mart. I had never done a farm theme cake before but found it to be sooo much fun and everyone enjoyed it. The cake itself was made from a pound cake recipe i had with almond flavoring. It was absolutely beautiful and the taste was amazing. My grandson was so happy to have his own personal cake for himself.

My son wanted a chocolate cake for his 'turning 2 cake.' So my son and daughter and I sat down and drew up our Farmyard Birthday Cake idea. Tractors area huge part of my son's life (we live on 165 acres of agricultural land and huge corn/pumpkin/cattle farm across the street.)
The tractor was purchased and while on the website the candles were found the barn, cow, chick, etc. My kids chose the placement of each candle after I drew the plans and when the cake was cooled we realized that we needed a flat place to write Happy Birthday.
I cut the lower right side and used the excess cake to build up the right side if the cake to make a better field. The icing was rather easy to spread on and once the first layer was on everything quickly came together. The dirt behind the tractor is crushed Oreo cookies.
The part that pulled it all together was the placement of the overgrown grass. As you can see from the photo it makes the cake!
