Farming Cake

by Noel Ahlers

I used an 11X15 pan and 2 boxes of white cake mix. I mixed my buttercream in the morning and spread and thin layer of the green out on some waxed paper. I allowed it to dry and then scrapped it off and chopped it up to make the green shavings. I iced it smooth with brown and green buttercream and piped the edge. I crushed up a package of chocolate graham crackers to make the 'dirt' crumble and we added a little of the green icing crumbs to make it more realistic. My husband, who grew up on a farm, was a big help for me. I needed him to help me find the right color for the green. A small amount of yellow was used for the words. As a note, it was really hard to 'write' on the crumbs as it lifted easily. I don't know how I would have done it differently though. However, when I noticed I made an error in the words, it lifted very easily after it had been in the refrigerator and I just lifted the words and filled in with green crumbs. The tractor and disc was picked up at a local farming store and really made the cake extra fun.

Homemade Farmyard Cake

Homemade Farmyard Cake

This farmyard cake is a beautifully moist mud cake with a chocolate muddy looking ganache icing. The farm animals were made from a plain modeling fondant coloured to suit each piece.

I created the barn house out of red fondant and added some raffia for straw. There is a little grey rat with a pink tail. My older ensured me we needed a rat coming from the barn. My fences were made rolled out fondant sliced into fence pailings and binded together by florist wire.

I rolled and cut grass from green fondant. I spent a lot of time practicing with the fondant making the animals. It is really quite easy with a little practice. It's like playing with playdoh.

This cake was for my son Tom's 1st Birthday. It was a real achievement. It was exactly how I had planned and I was really pleased. I had so many admiring comments. It was worth every late night making the animals.

Homemade Farmyard Birthday Cake Idea

Homemade Farmyard Birthday Cake Idea

This Farmyard Birthday Cake Idea was made for my 3 year old son's birthday. We had the party at my parents farm, so I thought a farm yard cake would suit it the best.

Its a chocolate 7" top cake. Everything on this cupcake cake is edible. I hand made all the animals on each cupcake & hand made all the decorations on the top cake using fondant.

The animal stack is also completely edible too. I did each animal and while it was still slightly soft I stacked it onto the top of the fully set animal under it.

Homemade Animal Farm Birthday Cake Idea

Homemade Animal Farm Birthday Cake Idea

I got quite carried away making the animals for this Animal Farm Birthday Cake Idea. It was so much fun. Both cakes are butter Madeira, layered with vanilla buttercream and fondant covered and the animals are 50/50 fondant and gumpaste.
