I baked this Baseball Cake in a 9x13 pan. Once cooled I removed and cut in half lengthwise. I lined the clean and empty 9x13 pan with Saran Wrap and placed half the cake in the bottom. I then took a quart of ice cream (cookies and cream) and spread evenly over half of the cake in the pan. Once the ice cream was spread I took the remaining half of the cake and placed it on top of the ice cream, quickly covering with plastic wrap and back into the freezer.
The next day I pulled the cake out of the pan using the plastic wrap and placed upside down on prepared cake board. My wonderful husband made a baseball field template out of construction paper which I placed over the frozen cake and dusted with powdered sugar so that I had the proper lines to follow while frosting. I used brown food coloring from Michaels to color the dirt and my husband piped the plain white butter cream for lines and bases, he has way more patience and a steady hand!
We topped with purchased players and "Rockies" cupcake sticks and back into the freezer it went. Set out for about a half hour before party time to soften.
My friend's baseball team was having their season end party, and wanted a Baseball Cake for the team! I figured it would be cute to use the red, white, and blue, since baseball is the American past time!
I started with Duncan Hines Butter Golden cake mix and made a square cake for the base, just thought that would give it a more "boyish" look. Then I went with two more tiers of round cakes. I used Wilton Buttercream icing and Wilton fondant. I started with a blue base, and darkened the blue with a touch of black coloring to make it resemble the blue of their team jersey's. I then smoothed it down with a Viva paper towel.
After icing the entire cake, and stacking it, I made some baseballs and stars out of fondant for the details. I added a few blue fondant polka dots, and some red trim. I then made a half rounded ball for the baseball on top. I iced it, added the red stitches and piped in some grass. The kids loved it, the Mom's were happy, and everyone had a great time at the party!!
It was my son's first birthday. We decided to give him a baseball themed party. He loves balls and baseball bats so made him a baseball cake.
I decorated a Wilton baseball for him to dig into. I also made a cake for all the guests. The bottom is the green grass of the field (two large round Wilton pans - sorry I can't remember the size) and put another baseball cake on top.
All cakes were Pillsbury Moist Supreme - Classic White cake. Our favorite. The icing is the Wilton recipe for butter cream. It really is easy and yummy. I used the Wilton icing dyes for the red and green. Be sure to use the "no taste" red, its better.
The cakes were both hits with the guests and my son loved his. I made photo baseball card invites using Photoshop and we decorated the party with baseball players, balls, bats using tablecloths and balloons. We had a cookout with the traditional burgers and dogs. Topping off the tables were boxes of cracker jacks, buy me some peanuts and crackerjacks. Everyone had a great time and loved the cakes!
