Birthday Barbie Cake

My daughter wanted a Barbie cake for her 4th bday so after looking online at some pics I thought…I can do that! Mind you… the only cakes I had ever made before were simple regular cakes with the icing straight out of the can. I used the pampered chef large batter bowl for the skirt and baked it at 300 for about an hour. (Note: I ended up inserting 2 metal spoons in the center and that really helped get the heat through the center. I should have bought a heating rod thing at the store…but I didn’t. However the spoons worked just as well) The flowers were from the craft section like for scrapbooking and I used mnm’s for the center…just a little icing on the back. I also bought whipped white icing and colored it with food coloring. Whipped icing made it easier to spread the color more evenly. The cake itself is white cake and strawberry cake and I just swirled the batter together for a marbled effect. Worked great. I also baked a round 9 inch cake and slid it under the skirt to add height. She still stuck up a little out of the top of the cake but the icing covered it nicely. Considering this was my first real baking experience I thought it came out great! I would suggest sketching out what your idea for the finished cake would be…helps when it comes to actually decorating!
