Birthday Safari
This is a cake I made for my grandson's 1st birthday. I am very new at cake decorating and this was the 1st time I had ever worked with fondant and I had a ball making all of the animals. The cake was pound cake covered in buttercream with crumbled Oreo cookies for dirt. The base was a 12 inch square. The middle layer was an 8 inch round and the top or mountain was baked in a Pampered Chef Batter Bowl. This worked great for the shape I was after and was really easy to turn out after it was baked. The palm trees were pretzel sticks with royal icing leaves. The palms and grass were more buttercream. The river was made with tinted piping gel. I got the idea for the jungle theme from his nursery. This cake was so much fun. I hope I get a chance to do another one soon.
