Awesome Homemade Butterfly Cake Ideas

This butterfly birthday cake was for my granddaughter’s seventh birthday, and she loved it. I used nine-inch heart-shaped pans. The top wings were each a single heart, the lower wings were a single heart cut in half. (These Butterfly cake ideas are also amazing!)

The body was Rice Crispy treats, and the antennas were Twizzlers. Half was chocolate cake, and the half vanilla to give the guests a choice of flavors.

The entire cake was frosted with yellow butter cream icing, and then decorated with colored sugar and different varieties of M&Ms – the only thing my grand kids like better than cake is cake with candy stuck to it. Finally, it was trimmed and edges covered with more butter cream frosting.

This cake turned out to be so large that my husband had to make a giant cake board to support it, and the cardboard layer underneath was two pieces for 13×9 cakes taped together! It served 50 people. I only had one heart-shaped pan, so it took a while to create; an evening to bake the cakes, and an afternoon to decorate.

Savannah is a sweet little redhead I met through a sister in church, a beautiful little person I grew to love very much.

When her birthday came around and I was asked to make this cake for her, it was more than an honor. Savannah was turning 1 and her mom needed a cake for guests (the blue one) and another one for Savannah’s very own… a smash cake (the pink one).

The cake was white, the icing buttercream, and the butterflies and flowers were crafted from gum paste.

I finished up the cake on the day of the party and took it to the house next door. Parties are lots more fun at grandma’s house… LOL.

They’re even more fun for grammy’s puppy. Yes, you guessed it. Her little pooch decided she needed to celebrate before the party, so she jumped on the table and took a couple of bites for herself! Needless to say grammy called me with an emergency 911 plea right away. Off I ran… extra icing in hand… laughing all the way!

It wasn’t long until the bitten part was cut away and covered in new icing. No worries… uh… except… Except for the puppy’s tell all blue lips, no one was the wiser!!

Coolest Butterfly Birthday Cake

Every year I spoil my two grandchildren with a homemade birthday cake of their own choice for their birthday parties. This year my granddaughter asked me to bake her a butterfly cake for her 6th birthday party.

After searching for Butterfly birthday cake ideas, I bought 2 packets of cakemix and baked the cake in a large rectangular cake tin. I also mixed pink, purple and white butter icing using pink and purple gel food coloring and white margarine.

The next morning I cut and pasted the butterfly’s body and 4 wings as I wanted them to be. First I iced the body in purple and put it in the middle of a silver cake plate. Then I decorated the bottom and top edges of the body also in purple with a star tip. Afterwards I stuck purple jelly tots on the top decorations. Then I started to ice each wing separately in pink putting them afterwards next to the body with an egg lifter.

I also decorated the bottom edges of each wing in pink and the top edges of each wing in purple using a star tip. Then I made a small and a bigger circle with white icing on each wing with a star tip. I also stuck silver balls in smaller circles in each white circle on the wings. Finished with that I stuck 2 big brown Lindt chocolate balls in front of the body for eyes but it didn’t look nice to me. So I changed the brown eyes with 2 big white Ferrero Raffaello chocolate balls and that looked very nice to me. I also made a pupil on each eye with black butter icing.

For tentacles I used 2 thick black drop strings which I stuck it in front of the body under the 2 eyes and draped it in front of the body on the cake plate to look like tentacles. At the end I put several pink, purple and white candy butterflies on the cake plate. I also put 6 pink birthday candles before a letter 6 in the left back corner of the cake plate.

My granddaughter and her little friends thought the butterfly was beautiful and their appreciation and admiration made all my hard work and aching back worthwhile. Thanks for all the cool butterfly birthday cake ideas here on the site.
