Homemade Cars Cake with Wilton Cars Cake PAn

This Cars cake was made using the Wilton Car’s pan and 2 10″ round Wilton cake pans. I had taken the basic Wilton cake decorating class and decided that it was time to attempt a cake that was a little more challenging than what I had done in the past.

The Car’s pan took 1 box cake mix and the two rounds took 2 box cake mixes. I used homemade butter cream icing. You can find the recipe in the Wilton Class I decorating book or on their website. A tip that I learned while making this cake was that if you plan to color your icing red do it in as small of batches as possible. If you go too large with you white icing and try to color it red it will become watery, (even if you are using the gel color).

I did finally achieve the red color that I was looking for by blending a few colors of red together. Be sure if you are going to attempt a cake like this that you allow yourself enough time for any mishaps that occur.

My first attempt at the 12 x 18 sheet pan that I was originally going to use for the base stuck to the pan and was not able to be salvaged. Hence the 10″ rounds, which I think in the end looked better anyway, as they look like tires from a race car. Have a blast and don’t stress out too much this is coming from your heart. Your kids will love it and that is all that matters.
