Coolest Gnome Cake

This Gnome cake was made for a shared birthday between a 99 year old grandmother and her two granddaughters (one child from each of the grandmother’s two daughters). My grandmother collected gnomes over the years and we thought this would be a great cake to celebrate her birthday.

After taking some class courses through Wilton, I decided to try this cake on my own. The base of the cake was made with two oval cake pans stacked and layered. Buttercream icing was colored and covered the cake. Styrofoam was used for the gnome’s head and covered in fondant.

Shaping the face was the most difficult task on this cake. His nose is a bit too long, but it was a fun cake to make anyway. His cheeks were painted with red food coloring to give him a nice rosy blush. My gnome’s hat was made with the colored foam sheets and just twisted into a cone shape.

Finally, the beard and hair were added to connect the head and body. Fondant Mushrooms surround the gnome’s feet.
