I love to be crafty and creative but lets face it, it's also great to copy someone else's idea. Like many others on this site, I went out and bought Wilton's ball cake pan. I used half a ball for each section of the body. I used 3 boxes of cake mix, the darker colored icing were chocolate cake and the yellow and green iced cakes were yellow cake. In the past I have purchaced cans of icing and colored them myself but that's time consuming and messy plus no canned icing tastes yummier than the butter cream frosting that my local Publix grocery store makes. They sell their frosting, colored and all. Kinda pricey but it's awesome.

Since my son was turning 2 I used the candles as his antennae and the eyes and smile were made with store bought icing gel. This Baby Einstein Caterpillar Birthday Cake is a simple cake to make and this cake is a crowd pleaser, for sure!

For this Baby Einstein Caterpillar Cake I used the Wilton sports ball cake pan. I did each cake a different flavor, to give the guests a variety. I made Wilton's standard butter cream frosting and for the red I used the "no flavor" variety. I had to use a lot of gel coloring, to get the colors so deep. For the black mouth, eyes and legs, I just combined all my leftover frosting and added a little bit of black and it came out great.

For the lettering and the antennae, I used foam sheets and stencils. I cut them out, glued toothpicks to the the back and stuck them in the cake. It took time to decorate, but it wasn't difficult. I took coconut shavings and put green food coloring in the bag to color it to make the grass. This cake turned out very cute.

Homemade Baby Einstein Caterpillar Birthday Cake

This Baby Einstein Caterpillar Birthday Cake was such fun to make! This was a half sheet cake, white and devils food cake. I used a royal icing for the entire cake. I used the mini ball pan for the ladybug and caterpillar. I cut off about 1/4 of the ball to help it look better on the cake.

To frost them I used the triple star tip and for the grass I used tip 233. I used a soft blue for the a sky and made all the other colors very vibrant. For the sun and clouds I just used different sizes of the rounds tips. The sun was made up of 5 different colors and I added the clouds on the other side to even out the visual of the cake.

Everyone loved it, especially our 2 year old daughter!

I used the baseball cake pan and made five different flavors. I used bamboo skewers for the support for the head. I had a lot of fun with this Baby Einstein Caterpiller cake.

I just used regular butter cream icing. Chocolate for the cheeks and head. I used sugar cookies for the Happy Birthday. I also colored coconut for grass. This was my daughter's first birthday.

Can't wait to see what is next year. I recommend using a very thick board for moving cake. It had a lot of weight to it. Hope this helps anyone trying to make this cake. I got this idea from this site. I love this site because I can get some great ideas. And I can share some of mine.

Homemade Baby Einstein Caterpillar Birthday Cake

I made this Baby Einstein Caterpillar birthday cake for my son's 1st birthday - it was about about the only thing he recognized at the time!

I used simple metal mixing bowls to bake the cake for the body segments. The legs, antenna, and tail are cupcakes, cut to fit their space. I used a star tip to decorate.

It was time consuming but generally fairly simple to complete.
