Caterpillar Garden

I made this cake for my baby’s first birthday. I used 3 cake mixes to make it all. The base was made in an 11″ x 15″ pan. I had orginally planned on putting the ladybug on top, but I decided it was too big. I used a little more than 2 of the cake mixes in this pan. The caterpillar was made using a Wilton mini ball pan. To make the lady bug, I used a small pyrex bowl for the body and one of the balls for the head. I used the rest of the cake mix for the caterpillar and ladybug. I used two types of buttercream icing…I used a whipped icing for the base and a traditional buttercream for all the colored icing. I thought it might help the decorations hold up better.

I added green food coloring to the caterpillar batter and pink food coloring to the lady bug that matched the icing color. I also made the base pink and purple marble. All the colors looked really cute when we cut into the cake.

The butterflies are suckers that I ordered from Oriental Trading Company. I gave the leftover suckers out with the party favors so that all the kids could have one. I pulled off the caterpillar head for the smash cake. Everyone loved the cake….especially the birthday girl.

I looked at lots of cakes on this website and on the wilton site to get ideas.
