Construction Site Cake

To make this cake I purchased 2 boxes of Duncan Hines cake mix at the grocery store. I wanted the cake to be special so I searched on-line for a home-made raspberry filling to spread between the two cakes. It was made with real frozen raspberries, sugar and some cornstarch… it turned out wonderfully and made the cake super-moist and delicious.

I baked both cakes, one after the other in the same pan to ensure the same size. Although, I did have to use a long knife to slice off the tops of each cake to make them flat and even. Then I spread the raspberry sauce (made the night before the party) and put the second cake on top of the first.

During baby’s morning nap, I decorated the cake.

Again, purchased white Duncan Hines cake frosting. I died it various colors using a few drops of food coloring: yellow for the sides, green for the top and orange for the sign.

I went to a fun candy store to get all the candy:

licorice strips for the stripes on the sidenand for the sign and road borders. White licorice pieces for the centerline of road. Boulder rock candy from the bins. I found the black sugar for the road and dirt (“Turtle Crisp”) ice cream topping at a local craft store in the cake section. And I found the two construction trucks at a specialty toy store. I put some non-edible foam signs and cones from a party store onto toothpicks to stick along the road and other places on the cake to fill in the empty spots.

…Didn’t realize I misspelled “Birthday” until after the party and the cake was all gone! …Life in the fast lane….
