Homemade 1 Birthday Cake
I made this 1 Birthday Cake for my baby girl's 1st birthday. We have 2 girls and I felt like I was somewhat out of ideas for a creative cake for her 1st birthday because I've already made a butterfly, a ladybug, a mermaid and a castle. So, I chose to keep it simple for Nora & made her a "1" to coordinate with all of the birthday decorations.
I used 2 boxes of cake mix & swirled them to make it a marbled vanilla & strawberry cake. I baked 1 large sheet cake 2 nights before the party & decorated the cake the night before the party. I cut out the "1" free hand from the rectangular sheet cake.
It was much harder than expected to apply the icing to the cake b/c of all the "raw edges" left by me cutting out the "1" from the rectangle. This made for some difficult areas to ice, but overall, I was pleased with the outcome.
