Homemade 10th Birthday Cake

Homemade 10th Birthday Cake

My daughter wanted a number 10 cake for her birthday this year, so I tried to come up with something a little bit more imaginative than just the number sitting on a board - and she loved this 10th Birthday Cake.

I made three cakes for this. One normal slab cake for the bottom and then another two cakes which I cut the numbers out of. I then used a standard butter icing mix. Used some of the icing to quickly ice the slab cake and then stuck the numbers into the icing. I then piped a more decorative icing over the top. With hindsight, I realize I should have piped the slab cake before I put the numbers on as I couldn't get inside the zero to pipe the cake exposed there. Still, no-one noticed on the day!

The decorative dragonflies, flowers and hearts are all made from white chocolate. I even wrote her name in chocolate! Just melt the white chocolate in the microwave (lowest heat possible) then add a drop or two of food colouring (don't use too much or the chocolate will seize). Then mix well and put into a plastic Ziploc bag, cut the tip off and pipe the shapes onto some baking paper. Put silver cachous in if wanted.

Then when chocolate has set, use to decorate on the top and around the sides of the cake. Any left over chocolate decorations can be put on a plate and served - they're always really enjoyed by the kids at the party.

What a pretty cake, a great idea! I'm going to try and do something similar for my 9 year old niece. I wanted to do a 9 but was looking for something a little more exciting than a 9 on a board. Thanks for sharing your clever ideas!
