Homemade 1st Birthday Butterfly Cake
For the large cake I simply baked 2 round cakes. I cut them in half and then placed them with the round edges touching each other. I then cut triangle shapes out of the middle and shaped the cake into the wings. The body is a twinkie covered in icing. I used a star tip but would recommend smoothing it out a little. Mine looked little a corn cob because of the star tip I used.
Then I outlined the wings segments with Wilton's glitter gel and filled it in with icing. Then I finished the rest off with pink icing stars. The antanaes are pipe cleaners. The small baby cake I made using heart shaped cupcake pans. I used the same decorating technique as for the big cake, except I used some of the scraps from the big cake for the body as a twinkie would be too big.
The grass is colored coconut. To color simply place coconut in a bowl with a few drops of green food coloring and stir until mixed. You only need a small amount of food coloring.
