Stunning Homemade 1st Birthday Cake with Flowers

This 1st birthday cake was done for a one year old who loves flowers and butterflies. I had done this little girl’s baby shower cake before she was born, so it was a labor of love.

This is a two tiered 10″ and 5″ round butter cream chocolate cake with a whipped chocolate ganache filling. I was told to make sure and use orange and purple because the birthday girl has orange hair and loves purple. All the decor is fondant and edible except the two butterfly toppers that I got at Hobby Lobby. They were so shiny and sparkly I couldn’t resist them. They were originally on long plastic sticks so I took them off and put them on a couple of Duff’s curly wires for cupcakes.

I used one of the newer Wilton molds (I think is called the fern mold) for the greenery and the orange border around the top tier. I made lots of colorful fantasy flowers with different flower cutters and the Tappits cutters for her name as well as a scallop border cutter for the base of the tiers. I used a lot of purple Disco Dust on the #1 topper I made from a mix of fondant and gum paste and I textured the top ‘flower’ with stamps from Michael’s.

Everyone loved it and my biggest thrill was getting a picture of little Emelia covered in chocolate and orange icing digging into her cake with the biggest smile ever.
