Coolest 30th Birthday Cake

My son in law was due for a 30th birthday and my daughter had arranged a surprise birthday meal with family and a few close friends, she asked me to make him a number 30 cake. This is what I did.

I covered the cake board in blue icing and set aside overnight to dry out. The next day I baked two A4 size cakes and when cold I sandwiched them together using butter cream and jam. I then cut out the shape of the 30 using a template I made earlier.

I then covered the whole cake in white icing and set aside. Meanwhile I printed off an old picture of him and placed it on some icing and cut round it. I didn’t want the picture touching the finished cake. I made it so that the picture and the icing underneath could be disposed of when cutting the cake.

I then pipe iced around the number in black icing and then around the photograph and then cut out black stars and attached to the cake. I attached some larger black and blue stars to the cake board and some small black stars above where the scroll was to be attached. I now made a scroll using flower paste and when dry wrote the message onto it before attaching to the cake.

He loved it, was a bit embarrassed though (ha ha).
