Coolest 3-layer Thomas Train Cake

Our son, Isaiah, has been going through a train phase for the past little while and so I decided to make him a train cake for his 3rd birthday.

I started off baking 3 round cakes (different sizes) by using spring-form pans. I froze them for a few days until it was time to decorate them. Once completely thawed, I cut each cake in half length-wise and added a thin layer of buttercream icing.

Once all 3 layers were done, I iced layers separately and placed them on top of eachother. Using a mixture of store-bought icing (bright colors) and homemade buttercream icing, I added the decorations, trim, grass (tip #233), and train track on the top layer.

We already had lots of Thomas the Tank Engine figurines in the house so I washed 3 of them real well and placed them on the train track. The ‘Happy 3rd Birthday Isaiah’ sign is just a printout I found online and modified it to fit our use, and taped toothpicks to the back of it so it could stand on it’s own.

This homemade 3-layer Thomas train cake was a real hit at Isaiah’s train birthday party!
