Homemade Abby Cadabby And Elmo Birthday Cake

I made this Abby Cadabby And Elmo Birthday Cake for my daughter's 3rd birthday. She loves Elmo and that's what she asked for. I made 2 boxed cakes and frosted them with canned icing.

For the design I covered the picture of Elmo and Abby with plastic wrap and taped it to a cutting board. I used decorating icing that comes in the tube in the cake section and to trace out my figures. After letting it set I mixed the colors of frosting that I would need to fill in the characters.

After letting the characters freeze I turned them out onto the frosted cake. I used Wilton's colored sugar to sprinkle over the top.

So you traced it with icing, filled in the characters, froze the whole thing on the cutting board...and then what? Did you flip the plastic wrap upside down? Or did the frozen frosting characters stay together and you just slid them off the plastic wrap onto the frosted cake? I love it and don't have time to not do it right. Any more info would be great!
