Coolest Alice in Wonderland Cake

I have only been doing cakes as a hobby for two years, so I’m very happy with how this Alice in Wonderland Cake turned out! It was a gift for my niece’s 8th grade graduation / 14th UNbirthday. When she said Alice in Wonderland for the theme, I was extremely excited. I had been wanting an excuse to try my hand at one, and finally had the green light.

This cake was very labor intensive – I started on the decorations back in June for the party at the end of August. I live in Virginia, and the celebration was in NJ, so I had to get as much done at home as I could. The teapot, Cheshire Cat tier, and Alice’s “body” are all Styrofoam (practice, practice, practice covering a round ball with fondant. It can be very frustrating! I ended up doing 3/4 of the ball and letting it dry, and went back and did the rest. The claret line is where the seam is).

Tylose powder was my very best friend with this cake – it really helped all of the flowers and figures stay put while drying. It took me 4 hours to do the mouse alone, so I can’t give an exact “how long” on this one. I plopped myself down in front of my computer so I had images in front of me at all times, and worked away with all of the figures. I always feel that color is the most important thing to get right when you’re working on well known characters. Everyone knows what they’re supposed to look like, so that’s the best place start to a good figure. They’re the most challenging and rewarding part of cakes to me.

I hope you like this cake as much as I loved making it. Thank you for looking!
