Homemade Alice in Wonderland Cake
This cake was made at the request of my 17 year old niece, having always been a fan of Alice in Wonderland.
The cake itself was made from 3 round sponges, layered with jam, the bottom layer consisting of two cakes layered and the top layer just one, cut to be a bit smaller all round. I also cut away at the side of the cakes so they leaned in a bit, making the cake look a bit lop sided and uneven (trying to keep in character with the general theme of Alice in Wonderland). It was then covered in green tinted fondant.
The characters took longer to do and I have to be honest, were a bit tricky, and only those that worked made it to the cake... the Cheshire cat remained invisible! I made them from modeling icing, over the course of a week and just sat with pictures from the book in front of me, trying to mold them as best I could. If you just persevere with it, you'll be amazed what you can make from icing (the modeling paste was great to work with, much better than trying to use fondant). It also hardens quickly, meaning what you make will keep its shape etc. I just bought it in white, from a cake company, and colored whatever I needed with paste food colorings.
My niece loved it, and refused to cut it.
