Homemade Ariel Cake
This Ariel Cake was fun to make, but the details were a bit time consuming. I made the cake in a standard 2.5 L Pyrex glass mixing bowl. I then used 3 9" round cakes on the bottom so the doll would fit inside. I used yellow cake for the top portion and chocolate cake for the bottom 2 layers. It's easier to put the yellow on top because you won't see the cake as much through the frosting, so you can use less. I got my ideas from this one off of this site. I basically took about 3 of the cakes that I really liked and put those elements into mine.
I would not suggest using the graham cracker crumbs as sand as I did in the picture. Although it looks really cute and realistic in person, I couldn't get the frosting to stick on the cake. It kept adhering to the crumbs, and trying to peel off. I was hoping the name and the shells and waves would be more distinct, but they just kept falling off. I did the best I could with it, but the next time I make something like this I'll omit the graham cracker crumbs.
I prepared the classic Wilton butter cream frosting and presented the cake on a 12" cake plate. It was a hit and even though it doesn't look like it, there is tons of cake in these cakes. Of every doll cake I've made in this shape, there's been an abundance of cake left over.
