Coolest Baby Birthday Cake Design

I made this homemade baby birthday cake design for my daughter’s 2nd birthday. She LOVES baby dolls and I saw some baby cakes on this site and based this one off them.

It is made out of 2 boxed cake mixes – dark chocolate and french vanilla marbled together and covered with marshmallow fondant (very simple to make, it is just powdered sugar and melted marshmallows and tastes better to me than regular fondant).

The head is made in a 6’’ round cake pan, the body was made in a metal mixing bowl about 8’’ wide and the left over cake batter was cooked in an 8 x 8 brownie pan.

I froze the cakes for about an hour before frosting and cutting. I cut the feet and the arms out of the 8 x 8 cake. I filled and frosted the whole cake with Extra Rich Chocolate Buttercream. The legs and arms are “glued” on with frosting before putting the fondant over. I colored the fondant with some Wilton colors and some Neon food coloring gel.

Since making this cake it was suggested to me to use Kool-aid for coloring which flavors your fondant. We made the accessories out of the extra fondant. This was a HUGE hit with my daughter; she still talks about her homemade baby birthday cake design months later!

  1. I would love to have your recipe for the fondant. It sounds simple! I’ve always made butter cream icing and have been timid about making fondant because most I have read says it is very tricky. I bake my kids’ birthday cakes each year but that is the only experience I have!

Cute cake. You did a great job!
