Homemade Baby Einstein Cake

I made this Baby Einstein cake for my son's 1st birthday. He had some Baby Einstein books which he loved and I thought the characters and colours were so much fun and very suitable for a first birthday party.

The cake itself is carrot cake (which is nice and dense to hold up all that icing!)and all the coverings and animals are made from fondant. I baked the cake a day in advance of the party and did the white covering the evening before the party. The animals I modelled in the evening too, and let them harden a little overnight before attaching them to the cake the day of the party. The animals were all moulded onto cocktail sticks to keep them upright.

The finishing touches I did a few hours before the cake made it's grand entrance. No first birthday cake is complete without some sparkles which i added last of all.
