Coolest Baby Einsten Cake

My son loves to watch Baby Einstein so I decided to make the caterpillar cake for his first birthday party. I found this website and looked through all of the examples of a Baby Einstein cake and decided to use the Wilton sports ball pans.

I bought two sets (40% off coupons for Jo-Ann Fabrics helped with that expense.) It took my fiancé and myself an entire day to make this, but most of that was spent baking the cakes. We made 3 of balls out of Pillsbury Funfetti cake mix, one chocolate and one strawberry. It took two boxes of cake mix to make every ball, but there was always some left over so I used that to make the cupcakes.

We used cocktail sticks from Walmart for the antenna and tail. It was iced with a Wilton star tip. I used Wilton gel food coloring for the icing colors, big mistake! I had never done something like this before and had no idea how to get the colors I wanted. I ended up just taking what I could get because I ran out of the food coloring, and when people ate the strawberry cake, which ended up a pinkish red, it dyed their teeth! Luckily it wore off in a couple of hours.

It was totally worth making this cake, but it is a lot of time and effort. For the grass we just mixed a little green food coloring and coconut together and we used a little tube of black icing from the store for his name. We stuck Happy Birthday candles in the cake before slicing.
