Homemade Baby Shower Diaper Cake

Homemade Baby Shower Diaper Cake

I wanted to do something a little different for a baby shower I offered to bring a cake to. I took into consideration basic cake shapes and came up with this Baby Shower Diaper Cake idea.

I baked two eight inch round layers and assembled them frozen with a layer of buttercream frosting in between as well as chocolate chips as a surprise center. I find freezing the layers before frosting prevents fresh cakes from tearing while spreading the frosting.

I drew on a piece of paper a small sketch of what I had in mind then used a toothpick to "draw" the basic shapes on the cake. I used a writing tip to outline and fill in the areas for the belly and legs, then smoothed it with a small rubber spatula. I used in total two containers of ready made buttercream frosting.

The skin colour is a combination of yellow and red food colouring and once I finished with those sections I added a little more red to make the darker pink part of the diaper pin. The pin is made from a touch of black food colouring to make a silver colour and piped on with a writing tip. I used a small knife to remove a section to make it appear as if it were going through the diaper.

Along the base of the cake is the darker pink, again using a star tip. Very simple to do and fun to make.
