Cool Homemade Backpack and Map Birthday Cake

I baked a regular 9″ x 13″ cake and trimmed along the top, sides and bottom corners to get the curved Backpack shape. I used two of those extra cake pieces, iced together into a rectangle, to form Map. I propped the Map piece up a little to give him a 3D effect, and held him in place with toothpicks.

To ice, I just flat iced the main cake with tinted buttercream and piped the remaining icing on in the appropriate colors, using accent icing for the details like the black on the eyes, and the trim. The entire cake was on a large cutting board covered in tinfoil. I used remaining white icing to form the ‘word bubble’ spread onto the tinfoil, and then used a combination of store-bought candy letters and icing to finish Backpack’s birthday wishes.

Tip: Use a toothpick to outline on the icing where you want to draw the character’s features, such as the eyes and mouth. If you look carefully, you can see where I outlined Map’s eyebrows but forgot to fill them in!

I made this Homemade Backpack and Map Birthday Cake for Kaitlyn.
