Homemade Backyardigans Birthday Cake Idea
I made this Backyardigans Birthday Cake Idea for my son's 3rd birthday because he loves Pablo and the "soccer monster" is one of our favorites! The base cake is a rainbow cake frosted in buttercream with fondant accent clouds (to cover mistakes). Each side is a different color of brightly colored buttercream.
The grass is made with a tip used to make hair. The soccer ball is made in chocolate with Wilton's ball pan covered in fondant pieces. Pablo is shaped rkt and covered in fondant. I had never worked with rkt before and Pablo was much heavier than I anticipated, so the cake has some smashed parts despite my attempt to place dowels. I ended up having to push the base cake and soccer ball back into place a few times and fixing the icing as best I could.
Covered the cake board with blue fondant and tried to make the Happy Birthday in Backyardigans style lettering. Definitely a live and learn type cake! All in all, it turned out okay in the end and the kids loved pulling Pablo apart to eat him!
