Homemade Baptism Cake
As is a lovely British tradition, I used the top tier of our wedding cake as the base for my eldest daughter's baptism cake (luckily we were only married a year before my first daughter came along, so the cake wasn't too old)! I had to take off the old icing and marzipan and redo both before I could decorate it.
I decided to make a teddy bear out of marzipan to put on the top of the cake and I was really pleased with the result. To make the teddy, I made the body first out of a ball of marzipan, added another ball as a head and a tiny flat ball as his nose. I then added cylinders of marzipan as arms and legs and finally shaped some little ears. I used a very thin paint brush and food coloring to paint on ear-inners, eyes, nose and paws.
I gave the teddy some flowers to hold (they were part of the decoration on our wedding cake too - although you can buy flowers from sugar craft shops).
I used pink coloring to color some more marzipan to make little building blocks and piped letters on them. Our daughter is Philippa Rosemary so conveniently two words with the same number of letters! I added yellow stars (cut with a playdough cutter) to decorate, and used a pink ribbon tied around the cake and pinned in place.
This was my first ever attempt at icing and decorating a cake and I loved it, I've now made and iced cakes for all 3 of my children to date - some more ambitious than others!
