Beautiful Homemade Barbie Birthday Cake with Butterflies

My daughter wanted a homemade Barbie birthday cake for her 5th birthday. This was my first foray into working with fondant icing. I used a Wilton Wonder pan, which made a very nice skirt shape and comes with a rod for even baking (just used vanilla cake mix).

I crumb coated with buttercream icing and rolled out some fondant which I had tinted pink. This was laid over the skirt cake, leaving some folds, which I later used a star tip to highlight and used butterfly shaped sprinkles to decorate.

Together, my daughter and I made fondant butterflies using tiny cookie cutters. These I let dry draped over a “v” of aluminum foil to make the wings stick out. The butterflies were adhered when dry with dabs of buttercream. I made the bodice out of some rolled fondant, and covered Barbie’s legs and hair with some cling film.

To make the present she’s holding, I formed the box shape with a bit of fondant and cut out thin strips, looping them around to make the bow. To make Barbie hold the present, I used a clear plastic elastic around her wrists, then pulled her hands apart to place the gift in her hands. The elastic pulled her hands back together around the present holding it firmly.

I used a star tip and some silver dragees to add a few more decorations to the skirt. This was one of the most fun cakes to make, and my daughter loved that she got to keep the Barbie doll!
