Cool Colorful Homemade Barbie Cake for a 7th Birthday Party

The Barbie cake was for my niece’s 7th birthday. I baked a round sheet cake for the bottom covered in white fondant. I brushed pink shimmer powder (edible) over the bottom round cake, and baked the skirt in the Pampered Chef large mixing bowl.

I had to take out a little bit of cake with a spoon to insert the Barbie without cracking the skirt, and I also wrapped the bottom half of Barbie in Saran Wrap to protect her legs. The bodice was gumpaste shaded pink and molded around her body.

The skirt was piped in buttercream using #16 star tip in varying colors, and the balls around the base of the skirt and round cake were also buttercream. The letters were made using fondant (half tinted pink) and a mold kit. It pays to coat the letters in flour before pushing the fondant in, it makes the letters come out easier.

I inserted dowels in underneath the Barbie because it was fairly heavy. And it turns out, this cake feeds way more than 10 people. We didn’t even cut the bottom portion of the cake. Total decorating time was probably around 4 hours (I was being extremely careful though).
