Homemade Barnyard Birthday Cake

We decided on a barnyard theme for the party, and got on this site to look up ideas for a neat cake - as you can see I took bits and pieces from others great cakes and made my own. Really, this barnyard birthday cake is just two 9x13 cakes, but it's all in how you present it!

I frosted the cake with green premade and made it pretty smooth. Put up a pretzel fence glued together with chocolate around the edge, and finely ground some pretzels to make a driveway to the barn.

The barn is constructed of graham crackers - dangerous and difficult (I'm still not a pro at gingerbread houses!) so this took lots of frosting and some chocolate gluing as well, especially the top. Frosted with premade red frosting. I used wax paper and a zippy bag of melted chocolate to copy the rooster off a well-known hot sauce bottle, and with a little embellishment to make him into a weather vane, he really turned out nice, wish I had a better shot of him! The silo is a drink mix package thickly frosted, then piped lines and tons of frosting for the top.

I added the little characters for fun - they were part of his birthday present. I melted a little chocolate for the piggy to sit in.

It was a big hit, and not terribly difficult. Red and black decorations and balloons and we were set! It was a fun party.
