Coolest Beach Ball Cake

I made this beach ball cake for my son’s 2nd birthday party and wow, was it the talk of the party. I also made a mini one “just for him”. I used the Wilton 6″ sports ball pan and a 9×9 cake for the base.

I used 2 boxes of cake mix total. Made the 9×9 base first, frosted with vanilla frosting (dying the water part blue of course)and then swirled in some white to make “white caps”. The “sand” is a processed mixture of graham crackers and rice crispies for different shades of brown sprinkled in on with my hand.

The ball was made and then I sliced a bit off the bottom, so it sits evenly. Note: do not sit the ball at an angle. If you want that look, frost it to look so. The top will slide off! Frosted the sliced part and set straight on the base. Frost the center and place the top 1/2 on. I secured on all side with toothpicks to make sure it stayed in place.

Frost the entire ball for a base coat and then marked out my lines with a toothpick. If it doesn’t look right you can smooth over and trace again.

The circle with the piped “2” is fondant and the rest of the ball was piped on with a star tip. Size of the tip really doesn’t matter. Note: if you have to add a lot of food coloring to achieve the desired color, you can re thicken it by adding powdered sugar. Do not pipe on runny frosting, it will run down and ruin your cake!

Hope this helps someone and you like it
