Homemade Beach Ball Cake Idea
I made this Beach Ball Cake Idea for my son's 2nd Birthday. He was very into all sorts of balls this year, and since it falls in summer it was a perfect ball to choose.
It was a chocolate cake inside with a butter cream frosting. I used a sheet pan cake and built up the ball part, shaved off to form a curve effect. Then used a Wilton soccer ball mold for the top part. I layed the cake down on a huge box top and set it in crushed graham crackers all around.
My friend made the Flip flops from sugar. The shells you see in the picture are real and I removed them when we cut it so no one would eat them. The shovel is real is well and used for visual effect. I was pleased with how it came out. I used buttercream in a piping bag with a star tip to decorate it. I colored the cream with coloring gel. Gell works best being it does not change the consistency of the frosting at all. Also great is the fact you only need a tiny bit to get the color you need to create. It tasted great too and thankfully it fit in my fridge so not to melt.
