Homemade Beehive Cake
I made this Beehive Cake for a friend's birthday. I made it by baking one each of the following round cakes: 8, 7, 6, 5 to make the shape of the beehive. After I dirty-iced the cake and let it set, I carved it into the shape that I wanted. I then iced it smooth with a yellow-brown buttercream icing and created the lines with a serrated edge. I let it sit to crust a bit, and then lightly airbrushed the entire thing brown.
The honeybees are made of gumpaste. They are black stripes of gumpaste that I wrapped around the bodies. The eyes are drawn on with edible marker. The flower accents are fondant.
Everything is edible, except the wires that hold up the bees.
