Coolest Bird House Cake

My Mother in law’s birthday is hard for us because she doesn’t ever tell us what she wants. My husband made her the biggest bird house for her gift… so we went with the bird house theme for her special day…

This is the homemade Bird house cake that I make for her. I used the huge cup cake mold, and a 9×9 square flat sheet. I used boxed cake mix and frosting. I made the cake and let it cool before I “dirty iced” it.

I let the icing harden in the refrigerator. I used home made Fondant:

16oz Mini Marshmallows

2 to 5 tbs. water

2lbs Icing Sugar ( C&H powdered sugar)

½ cup Crisco

Melt Mellows & water, 30 sec. at a time in microwave until melted. Put ¾ powdered sugar. Grease hands really good with oil, kneed like bread. Add the rest of the sugar. Re-grease hands (if tears add water) use or store in a Double wrap with plastic, grease plastic wrap and put into a Ziploc for storage.

I divided the fondant into several parts and used food coloring to make different shades of colors. I used a plastic Dixie cup to make the base/tree trunk. I cut a whole in the bottom/flat sheet. I used the fondant to make the decorations. This homemade bird house cake was a lot of fun to make. And my mother in law loved it!
