Coolest Bird in Nest Birthday Cake

After my Mum had seen my Bagpuss cake that I’d made for my birthday (and sampled it!), she asked me to make a cake for her birthday.

After searching the internet for some ideas, I finally decided to make this Bird in Nest Birthday Cake, as she enjoys watching the birds feeding outside her kitchen window.

The nest was a bit of a pain. I’d originally planned to make it using Kataifi pastry, but couldn’t find any. I ended up cutting thin strips of filo, and wrapping it around the underside of a bowl. I just kept building it up until I had the required size, and thickness. I then warmed up some honey and covered my nest before baking in the oven. It still wasn’t the right colour, so once it had cooled I then painted it with food colouring.

The bird is entirely made of fondant, giving her a yellow bib, and green back. I tried to keep her looking as real as possible. I put her wings on after I’d put her in the nest, that way they could dry whilst resting on the side of the nest.

The butterflies, ivy, fence and cake covering are all fondant. The butterflies and leaves were made with cutters. I cut out the fence by hand, and tried to create a wood effect using one of the modelling tools.

Mum was really pleased.
