Homemade Birthday Belly Cake
Well I'm 22 weeks pregnant so I thought it would be great to have a belly cake. I have taken some Wilton decorating classes and I wanted to see if they paid off. I used the Wilton sports ball pan for the belly, a muffin pan for the boobs, and a 9x13 cake for the body. My daughter traced a template from a similar cake we saw online and she carved out the body.
I crumb coated the cake with buttercreme icing and let it chill for 1/2 an hour. I used red velvet cake which was a bit crumbly (next time let the cake chill before you carve to eliminate all the crumbs). We used already colored Wilton fondant, rolled, cut and placed on the homemade birthday belly cake. This was our first time making a cake like this and I think we did a very good job. Just make sure you always have enough fondant.
