Coolest Birthday Snake Cake

My 7 year old son is right into snakes and reptiles so I wasn’t surprised when he asked for this Birthday Snake Cake. The size approx 40 x 20 cm and the only thing I had big enough to put it on was my extra large chopping board.

I used my large rounded edge roasting dish to cook the cake up in. The cake itself was butter cake. Then once it was cooked, I placed it in the fridge to harden up a little before I cut the shape out. This will prevent it from crumbling too much as you cut it.

I just use icing on top of that to make the fondant stick to it. After rolling the fondant out into about 7cm square pieces, I used one of those pattern sticks (looks like old roof tiles). This took some time to do as the stick is only 1cm wide so each line had to be done separately and placed like chairs in a theater (hope that description is ok). I then placed each section along the snake, joining them as best I could.

My son wanted a green snake and for that I used the paste colouring mixed with a very little vodka and just paint as desired. The eyes were teddy bear eyes brought at any craft shop (any colour you like) and the “dirt” around the base of the snake was brown sugar. The tongue was rolled and cut out of pink fondant. The plaque was fondant as well and I just used a simple cutter for that.

The biggest comment I got was people asking me how did I get scales to look so good and the look on people’s faces was worth the even the time consuming details.
